ITINERARY
Explore Lake Ohrid and towns Struga and Ohrid
The best time to visit is probably during the summer season where boating trips can be arranged on Lake Ohrid. The city Ohrid itself is a UNESCO world heritage site with many ancient churches and King Samoil Fortress.
A few places to check out in Struga are: the Old Bazaar, St.George Church, and Halveti Teke.
TRANSPORTATION
To get to Ohrid the better route is to get to Struga, then take the local bus from Struga to Ohrid. There are few identifiable bus stops for the local bus. Ask the locals and look for people standing on the side of the road.
To get to Struga there are direct buses from Tirana and Skopje. There is also a bus from Ulcinj to Skopje that passes through Struga and it is possible to be dropped off on the side of the road. This option is not listed on the time tables but a few locals had arranged to be dropped off this way.
NOTE: It is a difficult to plan ahead and pre-book transportation in this area. There are no definitive websites with up-to-date, searchable schedules. The best resources for information were peer-supported sites such as tripadvisor, lonelyplanet forums or wikitravel.org. Some routes are not daily, or might have fewer buses during off-season so allot some flexibility when you’re traveling. There are also routes that are not listed and can be negotiated – you might be able to ask the bus driver to drop you off on the side of the road if the bus is passing through a city.
