Day 1: Arrive in Athens

Take bus from airport to the seaside town of Rafina for sea food. This is the port for ferries to Tinos, Andros, and Mykonos. Rafina is also a great place to visit in case of a long layover in Athens.

Chapel of St. George

For the evening check out Syntagma Square. The Parliament and the National Garden of Athens behind it is also a great place for a stroll.

Take Ermou street from Syntagma Square and walk towards Monastiraki Station, you’ll stumble upon the Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea, one of the oldest churches in Athens. Along the road are plenty of shops and restaurants for souvenirs and good eats.

Day 2: Make it a UNESCO World Heritage day and explore the Parthenon and Acropolis. The €12 ticket also gets you in the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora, and the Theatre of Dionysus.

Stay for the sunset and the night view of the Parthenon.

Day 3:  Hike up Lykavittos Hill (get off at Kolonaki Station) to get a panoramic view of Athens and visit the Chapel of St George atop the hill. There is also a funicular if hiking is not preferred.

Hotel Dioskouros was cheap and centrally located. It is within walking distance from the Parthenon and metro stations. However the facilities aren’t great.

Athens should be explored on foot. It is impossible to walk 10 steps without stumbling upon an artifact.

To explore towns outside Athens, such as the the port of Piraeus, take the metro. The day pass is €4 and is good for 24 hours. Many of the metro stations contain small museums and displays artifacts that were dug up during construction.

This is a good website for information on public transportation in Athens.

There are many sites around the Parthenon that can be explored on foot within a day.
